Turner Honored as "Mound Builder"

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner today was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the success of the Mound Advanced Technology Center in Miamisburg, a former Department of Energy defense weapons installation being redeveloped as a business and technology park. Turner has been a champion for Mound's redevelopment and the completion of environmental cleanup at the site.

When it appeared in 2007 that the Department of Energy would leave on the site an area known as OU-1 containing various wastes dating back to 1950s, Turner called for a Congressional hearing to be held at Mound to draw attention to the issue.

Collaborating with U.S. Rep. David Hobson and other members of the Congressional delegation, Turner then led the effort in Congress to provide adequate funding -- $40 million in total - to ensure that Mound's cleanup would be completed.

"Congressman Turner's actions have paved the way for Mound's future success," said Miamisburg Mayor Dick Church. "He has worked tirelessly to make certain that the federal government meets its obligations to this community."

Most recently, Turner supported a request to launch the site's redevelopment by way of $1 million in Congressionally directed funding in FY2009. The funds will be used to further develop a plan for the site to become an energy center.

Now in its fourth year, the Mound Builder award recognizes individuals who have been leaders in the effort to transform Mound into a successful business and technology park. Recipients are active in energizing community efforts, spreading awareness, and generating interest and excitement. The award's name pays tribute to the Adena Indians who lived in the area and built the conical mound that neighbors the site.

Past award recipients include the following:
